Rack Grade M1 Carbine - DELIVERY TIME 2- MONTHS
ITEM # DESCRIPTION PRICE AVAILABILITY
R017UDR UNDERWOOD $479 Accepting orders
R017NPR NATIONAL POSTAL METER $479 Accepting orders

Rack Grade Carbines have been refinished and rebuilt at least once and will exhibit in most cases varying degrees of wear on many parts. All the carbines have late features such as, adjustable sights (heavily staked) with bayonet lug bands and rotary safeties. Metal parts are mixed USGI. There are no carbines with early features. All are mechanically sound with good headspace. Bores will have some heavy pitting and exterior finish may show significant wear and some surface pitting. Muzzle will gauge over a three (3) on gauge. All of the carbines we have are returns from one of several countries and may have USGI walnut, birch, or other foreign replacement wood. Stocks may be M2 type pot belly. Wood may have seen heavy use, may or may not have original cartouches and may have foreign markings. Wood is sound, but will have dings, dents, gouges and cracks that do not affect the function of the carbine. Metal may have some foreign markings. Carbines in this grade show considerably more use and wear than the service grade.

are these "late" features ( see bolded sentence) difficult to undo/redo make ww2 like??

any thought apprecaited

D

I am only aware that the bayonet lug is, I can't say for certain about the other parts. One would assume so with the sights, not sure about the safety.

Yes the bayonet lug and rear sight are post war. You can carefully cut off the bayonet lug from the band. Also the rear sight can be changed but you need the puller for it.

I bought one a few years ago, it was a great buy. It will have post war sights, bayonet lug, safety, and probably post war round bolt. Bore and throat will gauge very well, so it will be a great shooter! All these parts are very easily replaceable for very cheap. Numrich and Fulton have all repro and original parts.

The rack grade I bought was a forgien return and was in excelent shape. I think the stock had to be replaced as it was birch and not walnut. $35 will get you an original one.

But all in all a very good investment and not hard to convert back to original specs. What ever you do, do not ruin a good barrel, even post war 50s by tapping it out. Buy a repro and tap that out. Repros have no historical value like an original one.

You don't have to cut the band at all when removing the bayonet lug, you just have to take the front sight off by taking out the sight pin then the sight key which is under the sight. This can be done either by you or a gunsmith if you like. I did it on mine and got a repop early sling swivel off ebay and then reassembled it.

The sight you have to tap out with a hammer and then just replace it with an early flip sight. No cutting involved (wouldn't wanna harm the barrel or the stock imho) and plus you can sell the bayonet lug and make a little money from that.

I just got my CMP Carbine today. I'll post pictures later and it has the Bayonet lug and post war sights. I plan to change them out.

Almond I didn't pull my sights. I cut the lug at the base and also on the barrel without damaging it. My carbine still has the Type 3 band but it looks like a type 1 now. Also Ward now owns it

Justin, check out Fulton armory for your sights and barell band. They have them for pretty cheap. They will hook you up.

.........and for Hitler's sake do not take it to a random gun smith unless you personally know the guy! They will rape your rifle of its valuable parts!

Yeah I saw them on Fulton Armory, nah I do everything myself, I don't trust most people. They have tools for removing the sights etc. But here is my Rack Grade Carbine From the CMP. I field Striped it and it was CLEAN! I looked up some of the parts this is what I came up with

-National Postal Meter Receiver 1955598
Approximate assembly date is Sept.-Nov. 1943.

-Marlin Barrel Unknown date. Most likely orginal. :)

-National Postal Meter Bolt. N 14 (flat bolt)

-Monarch Marking Co Mag catch. M

-Springfield Armory Sights. SA (Post War)

-Stock Italian. Fat 70

-Elgin Metal Novelty Co Front band Type 2 with baynot Lug (post war)

(some people on calgun.net said it was better then most rack grades and the cmp forum says there running low on carbines. Just to let you no)

I got lucky on the bolt too. Its not a round one. :) Just that bayonet lug and rear sights. And its got a flip safety. I was reading that if you take the sights off wrong you can break the peice that holds it on and it can't be replaced so I'm a little worried about changing it....

and the only way to get it to fire blanks is drilling the barrel? They don't make BFA's like the ones for the Garands?

Also D Bidus, The CMP forums say there running really low on carbines and there not expecting anymore of them. So buy know, I have a feeling when the CMP runs out completely all carbines on the market will go way up in price. Its alot easier to order from the CMP then I thought it was.

Took it to the range and it is extremely accurate, I was surprised.
