A coworker just told me that on a smoke break he saw a "B-14" fly by. After I made fun of him for awhile, I had him describe to me the plane.. and as the title says, a B-17 is touring around my neck of the woods for the next few days.

Here's an article (with some photos) from a local paper:
http://www.vcstar.com/news/2010/apr/19/nxxfcbomber20/

Quote:
There are only about a dozen fully operating B-17s, the iconic U.S. bomber instrumental in helping America and its Allies defeat the Nazis in World War II.

Today and Wednesday, one of the bombers will be on public display at the Oxnard Airport, and for a price — ranging from $385 to $425 — it will be available for short flights.

There's certainly worse ways to blow $400, but I doubt many of us are able to do that at any rate.. so there's a less glamourous but still pretty cool tour of the plane that can be taken:

Quote:
Members of the public can take ground tours of the plane today and Wednesday from 2 to 5 p.m. The cost is $5 per person or $15 per family. Military personnel and children younger than 8 accompanied by paying adults will be admitted free.

I then found the organization's website:
http://www.b17.org/

And their tour dates:
http://www.b17.org/tour/
    CA dates:
    April 20 - 21, Oxnard, CA
    April 23 - 25, Santra Barbara, CA
    April 27 - 28, Bakersfield, CA
    April 30 - May 2, Hayward, CA
    May 4 - 5, Watsonville, CA
    May 7 - 9, Napa, CA
    May 11 - 12, Chico, CA
    May 14 - 16, Sacramento, CA

Yeah, that's pretty rad! I was only going to post the Oxnard and SB dates, but I remembered you and Cray are along the route in later dates, so I figured CA dates would be good. I think I'll try and make it on the weekend in SB, do a ground tour of the bomber. Are you planning on seeing her?

I guess we were going to have a presence at the Santa Barbara show, but things got in the way.. It would have been pretty cool to have been able to be there in uniform and support the B-17, but oh well. Maybe next time.

I just went on one here in Lancaster a few months back called sentimental journey. It was well worth it. I highly recommend it.

I would pay extra to have them let me use that Norden Bomb sight and see how well it can lay down bombs!
